Ultralife Powers the Animal Cam

Animal Cam on a CaracalA unique example of how Ultralife's batteries provide power solutions for challenging applications is the Animal Cam, a miniature digital video camera mounted to animals in the wild.

Through the use of unique Ultralife Thin Cell® lithium batteries, British wildlife cameraman Jonathan Watts powers his miniature video cameras mounted on animals small and large. He has provided an animals-eye view from pigeons, peregrine falcons and eagles to cape cobras and lynx's for viewers of popular nature documentary programs.

Ultralife battery used in Animal CamShown here, the battery powers a 480-line CCD camera with 115-degree angle of view and transmits the images over a microwave link for several hundred meters. The total weight of the system including the batteries is 49 grams (1.73 ounces) with a current drain of 130 mA lasting for up to 6-8 hours of operation. In this application the camera is mounted on a harness, or in some cases, particularly with birds, on a "T-shirt" made of Lurex on the animal's chest, side or back. Jonathan tells us that our light, low-profile Thin Cell lithium batteries are ideal for applications such as the Animal Cam that require lightweight and powerful batteries. Due to the flexible nature of the cells they can be bent to fit the animal, keeping the center of gravity of the battery close to the skin, and therefore ultimately comfortable for the animal to wear. This has been quite an important ingredient in the success of the system.
